Our 2025/2026 Impact Report: Building Stronger Urban Food Systems

Our 2025/2026 Impact Report reflects a year of practical change, community leadership, and collaboration to build stronger, fairer urban food systems. Across Cape Town, farmers are growing food and generating income, informal traders are improving their businesses, and communities are finding new ways to turn local challenges into opportunities.

Through the Agrihub Initiative, we supported 1,532 farmers across 238 farms, growing more than 64 tonnes of fresh produce and generating approximately R1.17 million in sales. In Langa, AfriFOODlinks helped transform informal food environments, removing more than 400 tonnes of accumulated waste from Smiley Market, diverting over 31 tonnes of organic waste from landfill, and supporting 44 food businesses to formalise. Meanwhile, Grow SA marked its fifth cohort, continuing to invest in grassroots leadership and green-economy opportunities. Oranjezicht City Farm strengthened its role as a space for practical learning and urban agroecology. At the same time, Food Indaba brought people together to explore the challenges and possibilities shaping our food system.

Across these programmes, a common lesson keeps emerging: lasting change is built through relationships, shared knowledge, and investment in people. From farmers and food traders to entrepreneurs, researchers, and community leaders, the people at the heart of this work are helping shape more resilient, inclusive urban food systems. Through Food Dialogues in five African cities, these conversations and experiences are also contributing to wider learning and collaboration across the continent.
