From Waste to Opportunity: Pamela Nontshinga’s Journey of Leadership and Community Impact

For Pamela Nontshinga, Operations Leader for the Langa Waste Diversion Project, the role has been a journey of learning, leadership, and community impact.

Born and raised in Langa and a mother of three, Pamela has worked in nursing and health and safety, but has always been driven by a desire to make a difference in her community. When she joined the project, she saw waste as something to be thrown away. Today, she understands its potential to create jobs, support farmers, and contribute to cleaner, healthier neighbourhoods.

Leading the project has challenged Pamela to navigate different personalities, manage conflicts, and guide a team towards a shared vision. With support from mentors and colleagues, she has developed strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.

She has also witnessed a shift in the community. More residents are learning how to manage household waste responsibly, helping reduce pollution and improve local living conditions.

“The project has changed the way I think about waste and about myself,” says Pamela. “I see myself as a leader and role model in the community, and I want to continue creating positive change wherever I can.”

Through her work, Pamela is helping transform waste into opportunity while building a stronger, more sustainable Langa.
