Empowering Langa Farmers Through Agroecology & Business Training with WWF Nedbank Green Trust

Sustainable farming and financial literacy are key to the long-term success of small-scale farmers. In the past year, Langa farmers participated in two workshops focused on equipping them with the necessary skills to enhance their agricultural practices and financial management.

Agroecology and Business Workshops
The Agroecology & Permaculture Workshop introduced farmers to sustainable and regenerative farming principles, emphasizing the importance of soil health, water conservation, and biodiversity. Attended by 30 farmers from 13 farms, the workshop covered essential techniques such as composting, companion planting, and natural pest control.

By implementing these methods, farmers can improve their productivity while maintaining ecological balance, ensuring the long-term sustainability of their farms.

In addition to sustainable farming, financial literacy and business acumen are essential for the success of small-scale farmers. The Business & Financial Workshop, attended by 30 farmers from 16 farms, provided critical training on budgeting, record-keeping, pricing strategies, cost-benefit analysis, and market access. The workshop also explored cooperative business models and financial planning to help farmers make informed decisions about their farm operations.

A Partnership for Growth
These workshops were made possible through a partnership with WWF Nedbank Green Trust, which began through an engagement with the Economic Development Partnership (EDP) and the Southern Africa Food Lab. Langa was identified as a key site for food systems governance and mapping, and this collaboration helped pinpoint areas where WWF could support agroecological initiatives in the area.

According to Rirhandzu Marivate, Programme Manager at SA Urban Food & Farming Trust, ‘Given our strong farming network in Langa through the Langa Agrihub, it was a natural step to conduct these training sessions with local farmers. The partnership has continued to grow, offering ongoing support to farmers in the region.’

As a central hub for small-scale farmers, the Agrihub plays a crucial role in connecting farmers with resources, training, and market opportunities.

Looking Ahead: More Training and Events in 2025
The success of these workshops has laid the foundation for future training and events aimed at further strengthening the Langa farming community.

Plans for 2025 include:

  • February: Refresher training on agroecology, permaculture, and business skills to reinforce and expand on previous learnings.
  • March: An agro-processing workshop to help farmers develop value-added products and increase their market potential.
  • March: A Market Day event to connect farmers with customers and potential buyers, creating direct sales opportunities and fostering relationships within the food system.
  • May: A nutrition workshop to educate farmers and the community on healthy eating and food security, reinforcing the link between sustainable farming and well-being.

These initiatives are part of a broader effort to ensure that Langa farmers have the tools and knowledge to build resilient, sustainable, and profitable farms.
